Managing Joint Pain

Did you know that every year, it's estimated that 1 in every 5 adults across the globe will suffer from some form of pain. Plus every one in 1 in 20 adults is believed to undergo chronic pain. 

By counting just 5 or 20 people around you, puts these statistics into perspective that pain is extremely common.

One pain prevalent across all people and commonly increases as we age is joint pain. 

Due to medical conditions, age, lifestyle habits and diet, joint pain tends to be unavoidable as we get older.

Whilst in my most cases it can't be eliminated from our lives completely, it can be managed with supplements. But before you truly know how you can handle joint pain properly, it's crucial that you fully understand it first.

About joint pain 

Joint pain is basically any discomfort, soreness, pain or inflammation that derives from your joints. If you're not too well versed with what a joint is, it's an area of your body where your muscles meet, and they help allow the bones in your skeleton to move. Some of your common joints are:

  • Shoulders
  • Elbows
  • Knees
  • Hips

In addition to these common ones, joint pain can also come from your bone, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, or muscles. Joint pain can vary depending on the individual, being mild or extremely painful. In addition to this, it can also be triggered by specific activities, some more than others. 

Common symptoms of Joint Pain 

The extremity of joint pain can vary depending on the person and the symptoms. Some of the common symptoms of joint pain are:

  • Joint redness
  • Swelling around the joints
  • Tenderness
  • Warmth on the joint
  • Limping
  • Your joint locking easily
  • Stiffness or weakness in your joints

Joint pain is often diagnosed by a doctor, and you should definitely consult one if you've had pain for over 3 days, have constant redness, and your joint is incredibly sore to touch. In addition to this, you should also seek immediate medical help if your joint looks deformed and the pain is severe. Typically joint pain is diagnosed by just a physical examination, but if it's severe, an x-ray might be required. 

What can cause it joint pain?

Usually, joint pain occurs from a wide range of conditions; some of the common ones you can expect are some of the following:

Arthritis 

Arthritis is a condition that commonly comes in two forms known as Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Both conditions can cause your joints to swell, become stiff and painful. Osteoarthritis often tends to be the more common form and occurs when the lining between the joints breaks down, causing pain. 

This type is mainly common in adults aged 40 and above, according to the American College of Rheumatology. On the other hand, Rheumatoid arthritis is when your joints become persistently inflamed across a set period of time. Other forms of arthritis can cause joint pain, which are:

  • Gout: Usually occurs in an attack and affects one or multiple joints at a time.
  • Ankylosing spondylitis: Mainly occurs in the lower back region. 

Other causes

In addition to arthritis, there's a lot of other triggers which could inflict gout pain, such as:

  • Growing pains in children and teenagers
  • Connective tissue disease 
  • Menopause
  • Vitamin D deficiency
  • Certain cancers
  • Exercise
  • Lupus
  • Tendonitis 
  • Broken bones 

Supplements for supporting joint pain 

While joint pain can either be consistent or come and go, supplements can help ease the pain. Regarding supplements, there's a lot of research that can support that it can help joint pain; if you suffer from joint pain, some supplements you might want to consider are:

Boswellia

This supplement is commonly known as frankincense and originates from the resin Boswellia in trees in the Middle East.
